In his interview with Louis Pattison in The Wire 464, musician Derek Piotr discusses his back catalogue of electroacoustic music, as well as his interest in folklore and collecting recordings on ‘non-singers’ for his Fieldwork Archive site. “I’m begging your readers, anything you remember, of your parents or grandparents, aunts or uncles singing, I would love to talk about it,” says Piotr. “Email me, we’ll set up a Zoom.” Before Piotr switched his focus to Fieldwork Archive, he released The Devil Knows How, an album of reinterpretations of traditional ballads and folk tunes, primarily from the repertoire of Appalachian dancer and faith healer Lena Bare Turbyfill and her descendants. At The Wire website, he shares an exclusive remix of one of the tracks. ““Yes, They All Sing” is one of two original tracks on my most recent album, The Devil Knows How, and features the speaking voices of Lena Turbyfill and Herbert Halpert, my telepathic-ouija-guiding-lights of the last few years. This remix by Kobwe is very dear to my heart – Kobwe is one of the few that manages to rustle Old Time traditions out into the gleam of the 21st century, without any airbrushing or gimmickry.” Read more about Derek Piotr and his projects in The Wire 464.
