It's hard to imagine what that moment felt like. To all the service members in the Pacific, ready to push forward. To the families who had already lost so much, and to those who had so much more to lose. To all the people who wondered if the world would still plunge into tyranny. All of that evaporated with the surrender of the Japanese, which was technically announced earlier in August but was formally signed on September 2, 1945. "God grant that in our pride of the hour, we may not forget the hard tasks that are still before us; that we may approach these with the same courage, zeal, and patience with which we faced the trials and problems of the past 4 years." - Harry S. Truman on Sept 1. This begs the question: how do you approach today's obstacles with the kind of courage, zeal, and patience that the greatest generation displayed in WWII? That is a good, honorable goal to strive toward in our own lives.
