Sven Wunder dips into a mode of resplendent chamber jazz for his newest, upping his compositional chops from his previous attmepts. A Backwoodz mainstay, the now in-demand producer Preservation, teams up with NYC-based rapper Gabe ‘Nandez for a bit of golden era-sounding throwback. JASSS returns with her third full length and first for her own label, shading the current dream-pop/trip-hop zeitgeist with a darker a tone. Bitchin Bajas newest for Drag City connects directly back to the jazz-infused collab with Joshua Abrams’ Natural Information Society from earlier this year. Ultraääni get into the reissue game, unearthing a Finnish gem from the late 70s, Aleksandra Ionowa album of painterly piano solos. Big one for fans of Emahoy Gebru or Harold Budd or Roger Eno. Edition of 250. Also in from the Ultraääni universe (or, at least their recently launched distro) is an album from sessionist Eero Savela. Kara-Lis Coverdale follows up her album from only a few months back with yet another exquisite gem for Smalltown Supersound, a set of ambient-hued solo piano that pairs nicely with that Ionawa reissue this week. Bar Italia finally follow up their back-to-back 2023 releases with their newest for Matador, moving past the zeitgeist-y pastiche of 90s indie rock references for a set of jagged rockers that comes across more like the sound of Brooklyn in the 00s. Numero continue to rummage around the deepest corners of Y2K indie rock, zeroing in on the cult Tiger Style imprint for a trio of reissues. Can’t get enough of 2000s indie rock this week?
