I've had the privilege of being a founder and member of @aroc_bayarea since its humble beginnings 15 years ago. been awesome to see it grow into what it is today. Five years ago, my newly opened restaurant @reemscalifornia came under attack by white supremacists in response to our mural to honor revolutionary activist Rasmea Odeh, and Oscar Grant, that drew connections between unjust conditions Black and Brown people face in Oakland, and that Palestinians face in our homeland and the US. AROC had my back and set up rapid response community safety teams to protect us from harm. Knowing that this organization supported me gives me the courage every day to take risks to boldly be an Arab woman who stands for justice. As I write this, Israeli violence against Palestinians intensifies by the minute. And as we get stronger in our demands to stop the injustice of Apartheid, AROC has come under attack more and more. Our movements are only as strong as the grassroonity organizations that support them. Takkaful means burden sharing in Arabic, taqwiyyah means strengthening/empowering.
