It was in the summer of 1988, when i was just 14, that I first met Poul Styrbæk.
Of course in that moment neither of us would have even contemplated the fact that this would be the beginning of a close family bond that in the physical world would last for over 34 years.
This came to an end this morning when Poul, my dear father in law, found his peace at nearly 87 years of age.
But our bond continues in spirit, forever in my heart and mind and with love and gratitude.
When I first met him he was a bit reserved, as he should be when a cocky teenage boy was ringing the doorbell to see his beautiful young daughter.
But he quickly came around and embraced me with his dry humor and mild sarcasm.
When I started cutting hair at 15 I saw a way in to having deeper conversations with him and our bond grew stronger, as did my relationship with his daughter. Poul has always been the most loving grandfather, speaking to our daughters several times a week and always on top of what was going on in their lives.
Poul was a man with a great eye for detail, his aesthetic sense was present in his home, in his clothes and in his interests for arts and crafts.
He was knowledgeable on subjects of interests and although he was not always sharing his wisdom, I feel fortunate to have had many a fun lecture or anecdote during our hair sessions.
He was at times incredibly stubborn and always got away with bending things his way, but always forgiven and showered with love, just the same.
A god given talent amongst the many that he possessed.
He was calm and rarely raised his voice.
He was a rock in my life, a constant reminder of a home intact, unlike my own.
It has been a great privilege to have had a family father like Poul in my life and I realized early on that loving his daughter meant loving him too.
And I shall continue to do so.
Rest in peace dear Poul.
