Grateful to have spent time with Vermeer’s Christ in the House of Martha and Mary — a rare and early work that reveals his roots before the quiet interiors and poetic domesticity he became known for.
Painted around 1654–1656, this work reflects the influence of the Utrecht Caravaggisti (Dutch followers of Caravaggio, known for dramatic lighting and realism), with its bold chiaroscuro (the strong contrast of light and dark) and emotionally charged figures. The composition subtly foreshadows Vermeer’s later genius: the intimate exchange, the spatial clarity, the quiet tension between action (Martha serving) and contemplation (Mary listening). Even in this biblical moment, he’s already exploring the stillness that would define his masterpieces.
Thank you, Scotland, for keeping this treasure safe.
