There is one bird thought to have the largest repertoire of songs in the entire avian world. This little singer imitates all the sounds around him, re-interpreting them in endless variations, searching for new phrases for his own arrangements, making the audible world his own. While most birds are satisfied with just a couple of phrases, why does this bird keep renewing its songs, learning and re-learning them, creating them over and over again? https://infrasonica.org/en/audible-matter-wave-5/untitled-teaser-for-a-hidden-song Three Thousand Songs is a live musical experiment that evolves from a desire to open our own forms of expression to the example of this little bird. Processes of recursive, renewed, relearned, and reperformed music are invited to take place with the inclusion of protagonists who play simultaneously – between individualism and cooperation, regulation and free expression – where all motifs, melodies, and rhythms stand on equal footing with one another. Forming their own musical voices through a constellation of Afro-rooted rhythms and a repertoire of phrases inspired by bird mimicry, four Cuban musicians will transform a stoneware studio into an experimental musical laboratory. Yearning and searching for new sounds and voices, including opening the door to becoming other in the course of their performance, these musicians will offer an experience that will lead to spaces of enlightenment and to transcendent states of mind. Inviting the audience to become an expanded resonant body for this extended space of musical composition, this performance departs from two previous projects: Being the Measure, Williams College Museum of Art, David Zink Yi 2016, in cooperation with Angie Keefer, and untitled, (a teaser for a hidden phrase) for Infrasonica, Audible Matter WAVE #5 - David Zink Yi, 2021.
