Gagosian is pleased to present Jim Shaw's new painting "The Bay of Pigs Thing” for $90,000, now online for forty-eight hours only. The imagery and composition of the painting have their origins in a 1960s swimsuit editorial showing models joining a group of marines to simulate the 1944 Normandy landings. In Shaw’s translation of this dubious magazine spread into a speculative political allegory, a torrent of water bursts from the center of the Watergate Complex in Washington, DC. An amphibious assault vehicle surfs the resultant wave toward the viewer, while troops running alongside it are played by various figures who were involved in or associated with the Watergate scandal, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and the Mafia’s allegedly CIA-funded sorties into Cuba.
