Today we remember Dorothy Pitman Hughes, photographed here with fellow activist Gloria Steinem to her left.⁣ ⁣ Hughes was a Black pioneer in feminism at a time when many Americans viewed feminism solely as a white, middle-class movement. As a child-care advocate, she worked tirelessly to improve the lives of families living in New York City.⁣ ⁣ In the 1970s, she joined forces with Steinem and founded the Women’s Action Alliance. They embarked on a series of high-profile national speaking tours to galvanize grassroots support for women’s issues. ⁣ ⁣ This first photograph was taken by Dan Wynn in 1971 for Esquire Magazine. Hughes and Steinem signal their solidarity with the Black Power salute. ⁣ ⁣ Forty-two years later, the two replicated the iconic photo.⁣ ⁣ (1) “Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes” (detail) by Dan Wynn, 1971.
