Today we remember Dorothy Pitman Hughes, photographed here with fellow activist Gloria Steinem to her left.
Hughes was a Black pioneer in feminism at a time when many Americans viewed feminism solely as a white, middle-class movement. As a child-care advocate, she worked tirelessly to improve the lives of families living in New York City.
In the 1970s, she joined forces with Steinem and founded the Women’s Action Alliance. They embarked on a series of high-profile national speaking tours to galvanize grassroots support for women’s issues.
This first photograph was taken by Dan Wynn in 1971 for Esquire Magazine. Hughes and Steinem signal their solidarity with the Black Power salute.
Forty-two years later, the two replicated the iconic photo.
