New Releases—Oct/24 Busy week around here—Blue Lake continues his jubilant ambient-folk for the Tonal Union imprint, drawing in a chamber quartet to help fully realize the expanse. Meitei hits the Japanese hot springs for an album of field recording-based collage and ambient intrigue. Paul St. Hilaire calls on a cast of producers made of serious shop faves for his newest, with guests that include Priori, Cousin, Mala, Batu and, surprisingly enough, Shinichi Atobe! JID makes a claim for rap album of the year with his newest, his album sitting alongside Clipse, Earl, billy woods, and, mostly likely, Armand Hammer’s upcoming. Claire Rousay continues to wow us, making the highlights for the umpteenth time with another restless set of her trademark emo ambient, this one featuring M. The newest from Agriculture hitting a sweet spot of shoegaze/slowcore/metal that’s hitting us pretty hard. Pair of reissues from the Darla catalog, including a late period Harold Budd and one of our favorite Windy & Carl albums, both finally back in print. One of the most hypnotizing albums we’ve heard from Death Is Not The End is finally here after a bit of hype surrounding it, The World Is But A Place Of Survival, which is the first volume (the second due later this year) of archival music from Ethiopia dedicated to the begena. Double shot in from Mika Vainio’s Ø moniker, including the eerie concrète and icy minimalism of his swansong Sysivalo, as well as the stripped down techno of Aste, an album culled from tracks reaching all the way back to 92. After dropping it a week early, we have the new Tortoise up for sale this week for its street date proper. Touch is the best thing we’ve heard from them in ages, it feels like a bit of a victory lap for the US post-rock legends. On that Chicago note, newest from Makaya McCraven is yet another head-turner that defies any simplistic tag, using jazz as a base for free-form experimentation that encompasses his love of hip-hop, funk and sampledelia.
