The 3 things the ocean has taught me... 1. The grandeur of God’s love One of my favorite things about surfing is when the set is over and the chaos of the crashing waves ceases and the sea becomes calm. Often times I’ll just kick back on my board and vibe like chicken Joe from surfs up. But I always love thinking about how big the ocean and how much bigger God’s love is compared to that. We’ve only explored 5% of the ocean, but God’s love is an eternal token of joy that can be experienced and encountered each and every day. 2. Logic vs emotion There’s a fine line between logic and emotion. When you’re at the lineup 40-50 yards out, riptides possibly pulling you out to sea without you knowing, and the thought of sharks possibly swimming just feet below you, it can be easy to get in your head. The part of your brain that acts as your fire alarm, called your amygdala, says dude this is sus get back to the beach. But logic says dude you’re chilling you’ve been here many times, you can use the rip to your advantage, and the sharks are fine bro they’re not gonna hurt you. Although I grew up in the water and am a very strong swimmer, the ocean continues to amaze me by her strength and unpredictability. The ocean has taught me a new level of water confidence and mental fortitude. 3. Rolling with the punches “PADDLE, PADDLE, PADDLE”. That’s all I hear from my buddy as I’m fighting demons trying to catch this wave peeling left. Boom it passes over me. AGAIN. The ocean has taught me to roll with the punches of life, dare I say waves hehe. Sometimes you catch that wave sometimes you don’t. Sometimes you get that job sometimes you don’t. Sometimes that girl you like goes on a date with you sometimes she laughs at you and prances away making you feel like a loser (not that that’s ever happened to me of course😀).
