As the UK mourns the death of Queen Elizabeth II, a project is unfolding that will encourage Britons to commemorate her reign in a singularly constructive way: by planting trees.
The Queen’s Green Canopy is a national campaign launched in 2021 that invites people to celebrate Elizabeth’s 2022 Platinum Jubilee by doing their bit to increase Britain’s tree cover. Involving anyone from individuals and community groups to city governments, the scheme starts its plantings for this year at the beginning of October and runs through March.
The project began with the Queen herself — alongside Charles, then Prince of Wales — planting the first tree in March of last year in the grounds of Windsor Castle. She said this year she was “deeply touched” by people’s enthusiastic response after more than a million trees were planted in her name.
If successful, the project will not just help with emissions reduction, habitat protection and summer cooling, but also create a uniquely beautiful monument to Britain’s longest-reigning monarch: a network of new trees spreading across the entire country.
