A home high in the sodden Orinda hills drifted 20 to 30 feet down a hillside Thursday morning, leaving it mostly intact and eerily sitting far below the doormat and the front porch, which were left behind.
Neighbors said the California home had begun sliding as early as Sunday.
An attorney representing the owners said engineers had tried unsuccessfully to stabilize the house before Thursday’s slide, and that it is likely a total loss.
On Friday the house slumped behind two gates, padlocked and covered in red and white tape warning “Life safety threat: do not enter.”
To the left of the house, a garage still sat in its normal location, but the roof was twisted, the walls were collapsed and sticks of lumber intermingled with household belongings, including appliances and artwork.
