I have been in Dąbrowa Górnicza and Rudy in Poland meeting more refugees whose lives have been turned upside down by the appalling, ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Poland has so far taken in a staggering 4.71 million people. My charity @sarahs_trust_ is doing all it can to help, sending in articulated lorries with humanitarian aid including food, books and shoes to border towns. I have had three of my own children’s books translated into braille for a group of children who are members of a truly inspiring blind choir. They were all attending a music college in Ukraine which was bombed by the Russians, leading them to flee with their headteacher. They are now being accommodated at a special needs school in Poland and many of them don’t know whether their parents are alive or dead. Given all they have been through, the performance they put on was simply stunning and so moving, and we are now aiming to help them release a charity single. While in Poland I also erected a tea tent to host refugee children and their families, which was free for anyone to join, and the Ukrainian families mixed happily with locals and tourists. The Ukrainian women helped bake the delicious biscuits and cakes. We are also funding £14,000-worth of computers to help the children’s schooling and a new box of play-based activities called Play in a Box which I have developed with Montessori Schools and is designed to encourage children’s development.
