Oh my, Homunculi! A little while ago I was listening to Sam Harris (Making Sense podcast); in discussion with professor and philosopher Jay Garfield about the illusion of self...Sam referenced “homunculus” in the context of our (fully formed, but miniature) inner self (at the most basic explanation). And then came across this: A Homunculus (人造人間 ホムンクルス , Homunkurusu, Latin for “Little Human”, Japanese for “Artificial Human”) refers to the medieval legendary concept of an artificially created human, presumably brought into existence by certain means of alchemy.
