In the days before digital image making, photographer Melvin Sokolsky—who died on August 29 at the age of 88—ambitiously captured otherworldly visuals that were often complex to pull off. Perhaps his most famous was his 1963 bubble series featuring model Simone d’Aillencourt floating in a space-age translucent orb, which he produced using two giant fabricated plexiglass hemispheres hoisted by a crane. The story heralded the arrival of a new fashion season amid an era of social and cultural upheaval, but also, in Sokolsky, a prodigious new talent who would create some of the most indelible pictures to appear in Harper’s Bazaar.
