Almost three years to the day MeMe’s Diner opened its doors. Two weeks from now we will be closing them. When @willard_sonoma and I first set out to open a neighborhood restaurant, we wanted to welcome everyone.. but center queers. It wasn’t our main goal but it was a shared value that translated into our brand of hospitality. When we opened our doors (fuck)Trump was just one year into his “presidency” and it was clear that safe spaces were disappearing and we had to place our values on the same plate as our patty melts...and hope that people wanted both. What we learned was that a queer restaurant could become an institution overnight. We owe this to our staff, our community of organizers, cheerleaders, and leaders, and also to our guests who came back time and time again to be comforted by our politics and our food.
