Some thoughts on sharing thoughts: With the release of my first album in 2020, I felt sad and frustrated over the distance between all that I was experiencing around the release process, and the character counts and conventions offered to me by social media. Those feelings led to an essay which the lovely people at @gold_flake_paint published in their print edition the following year about some of the (specific/personal to me in my privilege) challenges of being a female artist online. It felt good to strip back the veil of self-promotion on social media and cultivate a space for honesty where people could know me beyond the self I perform here. It also surprised me to get so many responses from people who read it about what it had meant to them and how it had resonated. I felt like we were in conversation in a way that was more genuine and valuable than anything that usually happens for me online. Now, with the release of my second record I find myself again thinking about ways to be in conversation and to strip back the gauze of online self-promotional spaces, in part because release cycles trigger my perfectionist tendencies like nothing else. As a bit of a challenge to myself, I want to create a space that’s inherently messy. Enter, a newsletter. It will be inconsistent. It will be chaotic. Sometimes it will have important updates about tours and merch. Mostly it will just be my otherwise placeless musings about the strange intersections of humanness and music-making. And it will be very scary for me! But I’d love to hear from you in reply. My first edition will come out later this week. I’ll share some thoughts about the anxiety of release days and the challenge of trying to take it all in. Talk soon, AOG
