How do you support the fight for civil rights? For part of his brief lifetime, the activist Malcolm X aligned himself with the Nation of Islam, a Black separatist group.
He became one of their most well-known spokespeople, drawing large crowds, who listened intently to his riveting speeches. After disavowing the tactics and teachings of the Nation of Islam in 1964, Malcolm X continued working in support of civil rights.
Threatened by the Nation of Islam and under surveillance by the FBI, he was assassinated in New York City in 1965.
