Yesterday, in response to attacks on #transgender rights in #texas and beyond, I published an op-ed in @nytimes @nytopinion putting contemporary debates into context with history and medicine. It will be in print in the Sunday Review. Because of right-wing fear-monstering, most people don’t know just how positive the science is behind #transition— or the history of those fears, fears that are false but have been repeated as true until they’ve warped the discourse. I’ll be honest: I hated writing this piece. Reading my way through hate took a toll. I’m grateful to have this thing done and out there. But I am also grateful to have met all the incredible people who talked to me about their work fighting for change and justice and proud to have published a piece that quotes only trans people on trans rights. We must be trusted to know who we are. Many thanks to @feliciarolletschke and Dr. stef shuster for talking with me; @boell_us for funding my reporting in Germany; to @hayleyemwall for the art; Rachel Poser and @nanaasfour1 at the Times; and the many dear friends and loved ones, inc @aeosworth @dappermaine @love________astro and others— too many to tag, but you know who you are and I love you— for giving feedback and emotional support. Grateful every damn day to have the ability to live as who I am and have such a wonderful community. I wish those things for everyone. Link in bio and in the comments. Please share if you’re so inclined. I’ve been a bit surprised and deeply gladdened by how positive the response is— maybe education can help shift the discourse. Thank you. 💜🏳️⚧️💜 #translivesmatter #protecttranskids #science
