In the moments before a fight what goes on in the mind of a fighter? The first few images are of Yoel Romero stretching and preparing himself for the fight against Phil Davis. I didn’t expect him to look directly at me during this moment but I think these came out pretty cool. The last few shots are of him after the decision was given to Phil. He thought the fight was five rounds but it was only three. This moment was crazy because the same people who were so excited to see him 15 mins prior began to boo him when he lost. As a sports photographer I’ve become invested in this combat world and it really pisses me off when “fans” boo these fighters. These are PEOPLE. They’re HUMAN. Regardless of how we want to see them perform. To me it’s inconsiderate, rude and plain assholery to should profanities after they’ve just put their bodies on the line to entertain you. I saw the look in Yoel’s eyes after a fan called him basura to his face while exiting the cage smh.
