Falling for you all over again. 🍂 Today marks the #FirstDayOfFall in the Northern Hemisphere and the #FirstDayOfSpring in the Southern Hemisphere. These astronomical events are also known as the fall and spring equinox – when both hemispheres experience the same amount of daylight. As Earth orbits around the Sun, our home planet's tilted axis changes the amount of sunlight each hemisphere gets. The Terra satellite captured these images in the fall of 2017 using the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer as it flew over the eastern United States and Canada. Launched in 1999, Terra explores the connections between Earth's atmosphere, land, ocean, energy balance, snow, and ice. Image Description: An overhead view as autumn descends on the Northern Hemisphere, turning much of the green from the deciduous forests to shades of orange and red. Lake Huron is in the upper left of the image, Lake Erie is in the bottom left, and Lake Ontario is high in the center – each is blue and turquoise.
