Excellence. As a child of immigrants, it is not unusual to have a complex relationship with excellence. On the one hand, it is touted as valuable, worthy, and notable. Yet on the other, it can feel like shackles. Many of us may have been taught that excellence is the only standard to live by. Anything less meant failure.
But as I am closing out a season of slowness and rest, I am deeply questioning this idea of excellence. Demanding excellence from all parts of our lives not only risks burnout, but also begs the question: What is our addiction to excellence costing us?
So many children of immigrants have shared with me that they are depleting themselves to pursue excellence while others seem to get by with mediocre outcomes and results. They are riddled with guilt when they perform in less than “excellent.” Not only are they exhausting themselves to maintain this image of excellence but they don’t seem to be validated for their efforts.
We cannot wait for others to notice or validate how we use our talents and resources. They cannot be the end all be all in determining the value of our work and lives. Excellence by driven by US, not others. Rooted in our values. Sustained by who we believe ourselves to be regardless of external validation or accolades.
But this also means being SELECTIVE about where we place our efforts in pursuing of excellence. Because sometimes your efforts and skill are wasted on those who refuse or fail to recognize you. That’s why we must realize that we get to CHOOSE when, where and with whom we decide to pursue excellence. Excellence is not necessary in all circumstances in your life. That is an oppressive lie sold to marginalized folks.
When a part of your life does not require excellence, then it can be enough to meet “spec,” which is fulfilling the required parameters of the task or role. Nothing more. Going beyond spec in situations where you will not be recognized or valued can be a waste of your energy and time. Choose wisely.
