Dr. Jenny chats about how important it is to challenge our narratives surrounding “underperformance.” As human beings we are wired to seek after things that allow us to feel impact and purpose in our lives. For most of us underperformance doesn’t actually mean that we are suddenly ineffective, lazy or no longer hard-working.
If there is a skill deficit, then perhaps you are performing below spec and this can be address with skill acquisition. But if there is no skill deficit, then when we feel as though we are under performing, it may be our mind telling us that we feel exhausted and potentially burnout. This is why we are not reaching our potential and feeling less effective in our lives. Could we reframe “underperformance” as a potential red flag that we have been pushing ourselves for too long and that we need to rest order to regain our sense of effectiveness in the important things in our lives? Underperformance is not an identity flaw. It is a reflection of our context and situation and that perhaps we need to move into a season of recuperation. 💛
