Microdosing... on social media? “Microdosing” or taking in amounts throughout the day affects your brain function and mood negatively. ⠀ 1️⃣ Social media competes for your attention. Small short bursts of processing information while scrolling makes your attention span shorter, making it more difficult to focus for longer periods of time or do “deep work”. ⠀ 2️⃣ It activates your stress response & floods your body with stress hormones - cortisol and adrenaline. This happens you are multi-tasking and over-stimulated. The relationship you have to social media (counting likes, looking up an ex partner or friend) can feel like an emotional threat - activating your fight-flight response. It can take a few minutes for your system to reset again, which wears down your stress system. ⠀ 3️⃣ I’m sure you’ve felt upset, triggered, pissed off or envious at some point while scrolling. Whether it’s in your personal community, celebrities or influencers, or the news, browsing at random times hits your mood & takes you away from the present moment. This can negatively impact your relationships as well, and triggers the comparison mindset or toxic productivity. ⠀ What can you do? 1. Dedicate a specific part of your day to social media scrolling instead of randomly. 2. Avoid starting & ending your day with social media check-ins. 3. Set rules for yourself. For e.g. I have told myself that I won’t pull out my phone in elevators. 4. Use app time limits & the DND feature on your phone. 5. Get others to help you. If you’re hanging with friends, commit to not picking up your phones etc. ⠀ I am soooo guilty of this so I know it’s a really hard habit to break. But I encourage you to think about ways you can make small changes. ⠀ What’s the hardest thing about social media for you?
