The slide I am most proud of, at every presentation at every academic medical conference I present at.
I made the personal decision in my career to not take any money $ from pharmaceutical companies, medical device, or supplement companies, to remain an unbiased resource of scientific information.
For so long-physicians in EBM have focused on criticizing pharma, which, many times is justified. But what about the unregulated multi BILLION dollar supplement industry that physicians like @dr_oz or @drmarkhyman or scientists like @hubermanlab or @davidsinclairphd use to profit off desperate patients looking for solutions?
I am posting this bc with my recent criticism of the above-there was some pushback from their fans who say we are too critical.
So here is my question for you:
For anyone who supports Hyman, Huberman, Sinclair, or any other health influencer who profits from supplements which have no data or efficacy, should all physicians start doing this? Should we all just say “forget ethics” & start making hundreds of thousands of dollars by selling you supplements that have no evidence or data to make easy money off of our followers? If your answer is yes, then you & I disagree on what is evidence based, ethical, patient centered care with scientific integrity.
It is required by LAW to have transparency between pharmaceutical companies & physicians. You can look up ANY physician in the US on the Sunshine Act database. There is NO such requirement for supplements, scammy blood tests, or scammy device sales which influencers/physicians/RDs profit off of (like recommending CGMs for people without diabetes)
So before you @ me about being critical - think about whether or not you want every physician to practice the same way as your “favorite” health influencer who is selling you scams.
There is already such distrust in the medical profession. As physicians, we work hard every day to gain patients trust, provide evidence informed care & shared decision making. There are MANY issues with our traditional healthcare system, which is fractured in so many ways & needs major overhaul. But MDs & PhDs peddling pseudoscience for profit is *not* the solution.
