Victory Lap...and the adventure that followed

The way the trail is now, you touch the border and then have to walk 30 miles back to Harts Pass, the closest road. Currently you can’t legally cross into Canada. We packed everything up after another great night at Rock Pass. Two Mile ate breakfast with us. We had a great hike back. It was weird cause I knew deep down it was almost over but didn’t feel it yet. Not too far before Harts Pass we ran into some hikers going to the border who said there was a mud/rock slide on the road to Harts Pass making it impassable. This could be a problem...not one I could fix right now, I’d have to wait until I could talk to the ranger. At the cut off to the dirt road to walk to Nugget and Colin’s car, I waited for a couple minutes for Nugget to get there so I could walk the last mile with her. The road was easy to walk on, so instead of watching my steps, I stared at the mountains. It was the first time it really hit me. As tears pooled in my eyes under my sunglasses, that familiar feeling of saying goodbye to a trail came over me. It didn’t last long, at least not now because it started to pour right right as we got into the van. We piled in and went down to the ranger hut. I tried not to freak out in the corner. It felt appropriate that it was raining at Harts Pass like it was when I arrived. The ranger, Zach, was great and gave us the low down. Long story short, we hung out for 2 hours and Colin grilled sausages. They were great! Two Mile and I got a ride from Bob 6 miles down the road to the beginning of the rock slides. We walked a couple miles through the rock slide area before getting a ride on the other end from this mom and son and dog who dropped Two Mile in Mazama and took me to Winthrop. I hated leaving Nugget and Colin trapped at Harts Pass but luckily they got the road good enough they could get the cars out of there so I ended up being able to meet up with them in Winthrop for dinner. I don’t know that it’s officially sunk in that this journey has come to a close after this wild day but I’m sure thankful for every part of it and wouldn’t have wanted to go through it with any other group of people.
