Last December, I was invited to Kabul to shoot Salar Pashtoonyar’s short film, BAD OMEN. The ripple effect of imperialism and regressive politics stretches far and wide across Afghanistan - often, the more intimate details about social issues within the country gets left out of the conversation. This project highlights these issues and is informed by the experiences of Salar’s mother, who had to endure so much grief and turmoil in order to support her family. The end result is a film that delves into the complexities of motherhood. It is a study of a character whose perseverance I find truly inspiring. It was such an honour to be entrusted to photograph a story so personal to Salar and to work with our amazingly collaborative lead, Fareshta Afshar.
Vancouver friends, please check it out at @VIFFest 2020. The film will be playing as a part of the Short Forum: Programme 4, at the end of September and into early October. dir: @salarshhhh fixer: @parwiz_arify starring: Fereshta Afshar, Marwa Amini, Irfan Amini editor: @heyitsalexfarah colour: @_patricksamaniego, @alteregopost location sound: Musa Rustami boom op: Quais Rustami driver: Edriss Tawakely sound design: @simcomplete Special shout out to our fixer, Parwiz Arify, who made the production of this film exceptionally seamless. No matter the obstacle, he always got shit done, found me the resources that I needed, and made shooting this project an absolute pleasure. He and his team were the most kind and welcoming crew I’ve ever worked with. A huge thanks to @mdff.ca, @kazikradwanski, and @dan_montgomery for hooking us up with gear when we found out it would cost twice our total budget just to insure our equipment rentals. 🖤❤️💚
