An Extended Song of Our People (AESOP) is a living tribute to the musical histories of the South Side. One of the CTA (@chicagocta)'s largest public art projects, AESOP comes alive at the 95th Street Red Line terminal every Monday morning from 7am - 10am and Friday evening from 4pm - 7pm.
Throughout the summer and through the end of October, DJ Ayana Contreras (@ms.ayana.contreras) curates the rhythmic interventions that celebrate the sonic legacies of soul, blues, jazz and funk that connect passengers from across the city to the South Side.
AESOP, a creative collaboration between Theaster Gates, Rebuild Foundation, and the CTA, provides South Side commuters with a cultural amenity that celebrates shared history, showcases local talent, and centers the voices, musics and stories of Black and Brown people. An Extended Song of Our People is an innovative public art project that demonstrates what is possible when artists are empowered to think creatively about civic infrastructure. This intervention continues Theaster Gates’ celebrated placemaking and public art practice, which famously began with the CTA’s public art program.
