Don’t let anyone shame you for changing.
⠀
A lot of times, people are uncomfortable with you changing because:
🔸They were used to the older version of you, and it was more convenient for them.
🔸Your new version is unfamiliar, and they have a hard time adapting to change.
🔸Your changes make them realize that they need to, but for whatever reason, they are not able to. Your growth might make them feel inadequate.
🔸They feel disconnected from the new version of you, & don’t have the emotional tools to meet you where you’ at.
⠀
Some common change-related issues happen when one person has:
1. emotional growth: they no longer want to gossip, talk badly about others or set clear expectations/boundaries
2. a lifestyle change: they don’t drink anymore, or have adopted healthier habits
3. a spiritual change: they are exploring religion or spirituality
⠀
These changes don’t mean that relationships have to end. However a reset is needed; an honest conversation about how these changes impact the relationship helps set expectations and the new norm.
⠀
Change can sometimes show you which relationships of yours no longer serve you. While it is difficult, it can really improve your happiness. Not every relationship is meant to last, and just because it ends - it doesn’t mean it was bad. Grieve those endings, but don’t let that keep you stuck.
⠀
Those who are invested in the relationship will make space for changes. Some of the best relationships are the ones where both people make space for each other’s growth. I encourage you to make space for honest conversations with the people in your life about how you’re changing.
