While I was reading the wonderful book “What I learned walking around the world”, by my dear friend @lenadivani , I started contemplating on what I learned from the cities I have lived in for a short or a longer while, doing what soothes and pleases me more than everything – walking, for hours on end. Thessaloniki is the city where I was born, studied, got my first job and lived until 2014. I love the waterfront, the great sidewalk in Kalamaria, Aretsou, the foggy mornings that make for the perfect setting for a Theo Angelopoulos’ film, the calmness and the warmth of its people. The main reason I love this city though, is because it’s where my mother and the people closest to me live.
Eight years ago, I found myself in Manchester, on a September morning, and I can still recall my first walk on Albert Square. That’s where I learned to live on my own, to care for a household, how to cook and how to be independent. In the morning, I was at the university campus, and Vasia and I were trying to figure out if we were going to become lawyers, or if we should follow a different path in our lives. In the evening, we explored every corner of the city, from Castlefield, by the legendary Old Trafford, to Debdale Park with the bright red trees. I arrived in London about a year later and immediately decided that it was the city I would spend the following decade in. I remember admiring the architecture, visiting every exhibition in Tate and V&A, spending endless hours in Hampstead Heath. However, what I remember more vividly is the anxiety before job interviews, the frustration, and most importantly, that I learned to never give up and keep going. Which brings us to Athens. A city I had only ever known as a weekend destination, that I found myself living in for the past four years, a city that I can call my home, thanks to some people that were patient enough to show it to me and share its most beautiful corners. This issue is dedicated to the cities that we love and the people that live and create in them. Cities are more than just buildings, streets and endless hustle. Cities are shaped by their people and are colored by each moment and memory.
