LGBTQ+ training is seen as optional or a ‘nice to have’ when it comes to competency. This translates into our lives being seen as optional, too. The problem is that people don’t see homophobia, biphobia and transphobia as a human rights issue. We can all agree that human rights are not optional. We can also agree that the right to accessing safe and competent medical care is not optional. So, when people say that LGBTQ+ training should not be mandatory, it implies that queer and trans lives don’t matter in the same way that straight and cisgender lives do. Sometimes it helps to understand things by framing it a different way. Instead of saying that LGBTQ+ training should not be mandatory for healthcare professionals, let’s flip it around: “Straight and cisgender training should not be mandatory for healthcare professionals.” None of us would argue that this is true. So, why do we hold queer and trans training to a different standard? Let’s work together to make healthcare safer and more equitable for ALL people. ❤️ #inclusivecaresaveslives #inclusivecareproject
