I was introduced to @eli1ah after the Yenkyi Taxi Documentary @mikecalandra, @crudovolta and I produced back in 2018. We discussed the reasons for the doc, the whole concept of archiving and also how things would look like if we were to start music from scratch again.
At the start of 2020 @skilliam went to Ghana and Elijah hit me up. Again, Elijah really made an effort to understand my approach towards music, the Ghanaian influences to my sound and overall motivations for producing/DJ’ing.
I began to send Elijah some early demos of tracks I was working on and remember getting all shook awaiting the feedback to only hear back from him saying “ 'Armour' is a masterpiece” 😅🤲🏿
Covid hit but our convos kept flowing, often sending each other playlists and links to all things music. He brought to my attention some incredible examples of UK artists fusing their sounds with Jazz music, dropped tracks I could reference for my demos and offered a level of feedback that was so layered.
Two pieces of advice Elijah has shared that’s stuck with me: keep your arrangements as interesting as possible and try to keep your tracks under 04:30 long. Very simple actions that can preserve a track's impact but easily forgotten for me at times.
After making him aware of the album I was producing, he helped me to expand my sound palette - sending me projects to listen to and documentaries to watch - with the intention of sparking ideas for my album.
A lot more has happened since then but I can say with my chest that this album I’m about to release wouldn’t sound the same without Elijah’s input. Big up always 🖤💛
