Within every crisis lies the potential for a better future.
From the COVID-19 pandemic to the invasion of Ukraine, the devastating flooding in Pakistan, and the steady creep of warming temperatures, 2022 has been yet another year marked by crisis. It’s no wonder that permacrisis was Collins Dictionary’s word of the year.
But the origins of the word reveal that there is hope to be found within every disaster. The prefix “perma-” is rooted in the Latin word for permanent, meaning unchanging. But it can also be traced to the present participle, permanere—to go on, persist, survive. And that is precisely what so many of us are doing in the face of turbulence: enduring, deciding every day to plant the seeds of promise.
