'Back home, Counterspace is immersed in preserving local stories. Be it developing an interactive, web-based platform that invites visitors to explore the history of Kwa-Mai Mai, a traditional healers market in Jeppestown, or reinventing a disused Dutch church into a mosque whilst acknowledging its Christian inception, the studio is retelling, and making, history. Next up, Vally has been announced as a curator for Saudi Arabia’s inaugural Islamic Arts Biennale. Taking place from January 23 until April 23, 2023, at the Hajj Terminal in Jeddah, its theme – Awwal Bayt, meaning ‘first house’ in Arabic – signifies the importance of this sacred site. “The theme of Awwal Bayt invites contemplation of belonging,” explains Vally. “We are excited by the opportunity to create a temporary home for artists and audiences to reflect on the sacred, the personal and the communal.” ' @sumi_v spoke to @archdigest Middle East about the origins of her practice, and the upcoming Islamic Arts Biennale in Saudi Arabia.
