Remember Tahlequah? An orca mom, she kept her dead calf afloat for 17 days in 2018 during what many of us took for a sustained act of mourning. Tahlequah is one of 74 remaining Southern Resident orcas in Burrard Inlet, British Columbia. She’s also a mom again. Orca pods are matriarchal, and it's the matriarchs of the local Tsleil-Waututh community who are leading the fight to save these animals—and the inlet—from a massive refinery and pipeline expansion.
