Remember Tahlequah? An orca mom, she kept her dead calf afloat for 17 days in 2018 during what many of us took for a sustained act of mourning. Tahlequah is one of 74 remaining Southern Resident orcas in Burrard Inlet, British Columbia. She’s also a mom again. Orca pods are matriarchal, and it's the matriarchs of the local Tsleil-Waututh community who are leading the fight to save these animals—and the inlet—from a massive refinery and pipeline expansion. Join photographer Danielle Da Silva (@photographerswithoutborders) and Nikki Sanchez (@nikkilaes), a Pipil and Irish/Scottish author, educator, and wilderness guide, as they observe the next generation of land and water defenders learning from their Tsleil-Waututh elders why the battles for these orcas might help keep humans from going extinct as well.
