Hayfever is rife at the moment and it can sometimes feel like the only solution is to hibernate indoors or do this 👆🏼but there are PLENTY of things that can help. 1. All the usual measures to reduce your contact with pollen. Keep windows closed, don’t hang washing outside, rub Vaseline on your nostrils, clear out your nostrils with a saline spray, change your clothes and have a shower as soon as you get home, wear wraparound sunnies, hoover regularly, avoid cut grass. If you have a pet they can bring pollen in too so will also need a hose down! 2. Triple therapy - you need an antihistamine, steroid nasal spray AND eye drops. Fexofenadine 120mg is now available *without* prescription (Allevia) so would try this if other over the counter meds have not helped. Do NOT use decongestants like Sudafed. Longer term use can cause rebound symptoms. You don’t need those! 3. If these measures still aren’t helping, see your GP. A higher dose of fexofenadine can be prescribed and if you have asthma alongside, some medications like montelukast are appropriate. Oral steroids are for more severe cases. Please remember your GP will assess and issue what they feel is best. Nb. Hayfever can sometimes make asthma worse so if you’re wheezy/using your reliever inhaler more, see your GP sooner. 4. There is an injection called Kenalog which is a steroid medication that can help to relieve symptoms. Steroids work because they essentially dampen the immune response. However it’s only available privately and there are multiple potential side effects associated with it. It’s not something to be taken lightly and you have to have exhausted all the above options first. Make sure you know about the potential side effects too! 5. Immunotherapy is a treatment to help build up immunity to pollen. It’s best to start a few months before hayfever season. Availability may be limited on NHS. Hope that helps!
