Eight London theatre interiors that’ll blow your mind
📍Battersea Arts Centre Great Hall
This grand Victorian town-hall-turned-avant-garde arts centre was swept by fire in 2015, but its already stunning Great Hall bounced back even stronger – the decision to leave the charred walls unrestored adds to its sense of drama.
📍London Palladium
You’ve probably seen the Palladium’s vast, swooping wooden floor and richly gilded red and gold seating on the telly. But the world’s foremost variety hall is even more awesome in the flesh.
📍Bridge Theatre
One of London’s newest theatres, the Bridge’s auditorium is a model of practical comfort, but it’s the foyer that’s a stunner, with its bewitching installation of 600 flower-like pendant lights at different heights.
📍Trafalgar Theatre
Until recently, the Trafalgar Theatre was Trafalgar Studios: probably the ugliest theatre in London, possibly the world. But a lavish restoration job has turned this drab-looking theatre into an immaculate art deco wonderland.
📍Sam Wanamaker Playhouse
We all know what the outdoor Globe Theatre looks like, but the Globe’s secret weapon is its smaller indoor theatre the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, a beautiful candlelit recreation of a Jacobean theatre.
📍Theatre Royal Drury Lane
There has been a theatre on this site since 1663, but the current building dates back to the Regency: owner Andrew Lloyd Webber has lavishly restored and upgraded the building in recent years.
📍London Coliseum
With 2,359 seats, the Coliseum is the biggest theatre in London, fact fans, though you might be too distracted by the extravagantly ornate – some might say garish? – decor to really notice. The domed room is a stunner by any definition.
📍Lyric Hammersmith
The Lyric is a sophisticated, ultra-modern theatre building that absolutely does not look like it first opened in 1895... that is, until you step into the main auditorium, a perfectly preserved late Victorian time capsule.
