The Anne Sophie Duval book arrived. It’s heaven.
“We are going to talk about Art déco,
more so about the year 1925, which
of course doesn't start in 1925, but in
the years 1905-1910.
There are two extremely important movements, as there is a very important split between the
decorators from the SAD (Société des Artistes Décorateurs), and the architects of the UAM
(Union des Artistes Modernes), which are a traditional movement and a modernist one.
PARIS
It is right to say that the Art déco phenomenon is typically parisian. People came to Paris because it
is the center of the decorative arts: Haute Couture is in Paris, furniture and designers are in Paris, jewelry is in Paris.
The creators of the time tried
to use both new materials and old materials but differently. For example, they developed the use of shagreen, which had already been used in the 18th century, but for very small refined objects.
Shagreen is the skin from little sharks from the Chinese seas, used like leather. So, lacquer, shagreen, mother-of-pearl, rock crystal, horn, ivory, tinted ivory, all those were used on furniture.” @galerie.annesophieduval
