UNIQUE! I titled the Resort 2023 COLLECTION 003: Static Journey. It revolves around the confluence of seemingly contradictory ideas: geometry and kinesis. The movement created by color and texture in the work of Sam Gilliam, one of my favorites and an artistic giant that passed on this year; the organic geometry of Ellsworth Kelly’s iconic color-blocked works in bold color; and the poetic vistas of Julie Dash’s “Daughters of the Dust” set in the land of my youth. Mind and heart dancing together. “Static Journey” also resonates with me on a personal level. My arc in fashion has been a dynamic one, and for all of the skill and thoughtfulness and energy i infuse into each body of work, it seems that my idea of beauty — an optimistic, femme-strong, earth-inclusive one from a Black queer’s point of view — is swimming upstream. The nature of a static journey, paddling in place, can take its toll, but that’s why I need you. I need your support, I need your push, I need you to be clear with this industry and this market that what I do with Harbison Studio resonates with you and you want it more. I won’t do this without each of you. It’s Alien Superstar status. :-) - Charlie
