Via: @blackwealthcrew Spending time with Ms. Lewis is life changing. She will curse at you often. She will make you laugh out loud repeatedly. She will move you to tears with a song. When making a point, she will speak in a hushed tone, her voice barely above a whisper, only to then fling her hands overhead and shout out an expletive. She will tell you long stories, ask you questions about your life, and exude so much radiance that you can’t help but be mesmerized. - Yet underneath all that dazzling brilliance is a woman who has paid her dues and then some. As she described in her 2017 memoir, The Mother of Black Hollywood, Lewis was raised in poverty, molested as a child, dealt with sex addiction, and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 33. Despite that, she’s accomplished more in her career than most do in a lifetime: appearances in more than 400 episodic television shows, movies, and Broadway shows; performances in more than 200 concerts worldwide; an honorary doctorate from her alma mater, Webster University; and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. - Now, the star of ABC’s Black-ish and Showtime’s I Love That for You has a new book, Walking in My Joy: In These Streets, in which she shares details about her travels, her family, her past relationships, and her activism. She describes how the 2016 election sparked a change in her, and how she began to use her platform for good. She tells Shondaland that her work to fight against injustice was sparked, in part, by her age. “At 65, you realize you’ve got 30 summers left,” she says. “When you really let that sink in, there’s no more time for bulls--t.” - -Follow @blackwealthplaybook if you love everything Black Entrepreneurship, Excellence & Success! 💫
