The match see-sawed back and forth, with both teams exerting themselves in the scorching island heat. At her wits’ end, Claudia excitedly called out “Look! Jimmy Buffett!” Immediately, both Fitzgeralds turned a sharp 90° to catch the six-stringed seafarer, but alas, were met with nothing but an empty row of bleachers. Indeed, this was the classic “made-you-look” stratagem, a maneuver not seen on the courts since 1978. And it proved to be effective, as during that split-second distraction, Dawn landed an unstoppable forehand that swiftly concluded their rivalry — game, set, and match. Needless to say, the Fitzgeralds had discovered a profound amount of respect for Claudia and Dawn that evening. Resulting in a round of freshly-dispensed canned beverages “on the house.” Well done, ladies.
