It depicted a person holding a hatchling leatherback sea turtle up in front of the lighthouse on Loggerhead Key. The image was taken by a park scientist and turtle research permit holder, Kayla Nimmo (Permit MTP-22-187), from the first successful leatherback nest in a decade. Part of the nest monitoring protocols are to check the nest 3 days after hatching to inventory it. When these happen, stragglers are sometimes found, like the little one in the image. The nest checks happen in the morning so these hatchlings are kept safe and released on the shoreline the following night. All sea turtles are protected and it is illegal to touch or disturb them. That goes for all wildlife in the park too! Only trained staff covered under permits are allowed to handle sea turtles in the park. As a reminder: -Do not approach & interfere with nesting or hatching sea turtles -Only use red light at night on beaches to prevent turtles becoming disorientated -Remove beach equipment and kayaks from beaches before sundown -Fill in large holes and remove sandcastle obstructions on beaches before sundown -Report any sea turtle activity to a Park Ranger If you observe a sea turtle nesting or hatching, please observe from a responsible distance then inform park staff. #GreatOutdoorsAct #FeeFreeDay #DryTortugas #DryTortugasNationalPark #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque-
