For decades, Friendship Park, and the Binational Garden located within it, was a place for Latino families to reunite. Now its existence is being threatened by Border Patrol officials' recent announcement that they will continue moving forward with the construction of two 30-foot border barriers. Advocates of the park have continued to call for construction to be halted, which has drawn the attention of Congress – with 15 members petitioning DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to remain committed to his statements of protecting public access to the park.
