“The chains of habit are too light to be felt and too powerful to be broken.”
Friends, if you happen to be in the 36-46 age category, I’d ask you to double down on your health habits-don’t wait for another New Year’s Resolution. This is a critical decade, according to a recent study in Finland.
🧬 Why your late 30s + early 40s matter
A Finnish study that tracked people from age 27 to 61 found that 36–46 is a critical decade for health habits.
✨ What they discovered:
By age 36, unhealthy habits started showing measurable effects.
🚭 Smoking → linked to declining mental health over time.
🍷 Heavy drinking → harmed both mental + physical health.
🛋️ Inactivity → tied to physical decline (heart, lungs, metabolism).
📉 Long-term: People who kept these habits into midlife had higher rates of depression, heart + lung disease, cancer, and even early death.
💡 But here’s the hopeful part:
➡️ Even changing habits in your 40s improved health outcomes decades later.
Takeaway:
Your mid-30s to mid-40s aren’t just “middle years.” They’re the pivot point where lifestyle starts writing the script for how you’ll age.

For me, my skincare routine is an important part of my healthy habits regimen, and I dedicate an entire chapter to it in my book, Practical Optimism: The Art, Science and Practice of Exceptional Wellbein. “Practicing Healthy Habits”-one of the 8 Pillars of Practical Optimism
