10 YEARS WITHOUT OSCAR
Today marks the first decade since Oscar Niemeyer passed away in Rio de Janeiro. While the date invites celebration about his life, achievements and relevance, it also requires serious thoughts about how the world has changed since then, and how this affects the preservation and understanding of his work.
There are many challenges facing the preservation of modern architecture, and in Brazil their very perception as heritage has proven to pose a significant obstacle to their survival. Even if our heritage departments were in the avant-garde regarding the listing of modern monuments, there are still important buildings by the country's most revered architect that are in very poor conditions, closed to visitors and even facing demolition.
How can we better work to preserve Niemeyer's buildings and carry his legacy to the next generations? What should be done about his Club in Diamantina, which remains a ruin? What can we expect about his Canoas house, that hasn't been the focus of a proper restoration project? How could we try to save some of his residential buildings in Sao Jose dos Campos, marked for demolition next year?
What does Niemeyer's legacy mean to you?
