I hope we are moving away from the ‘drop a dress size’ 👗 and ‘get a bikini body’ 👙 approach to selling fitness. But the flip side of focusing on function, strength 💪🏻 speed 🏃♀️ power 🏋️♀️ can also be problematic.
And I see a lot of this in fitness right now so to be clear.
Stronger makes you stronger but it doesn’t make you more worthy than someone with less strength. Faster makes you faster, but not more worthy. And guess what? Healthier makes you healthier but not worthier than someone who has health challenges.
Whether our feelings of worth or value are dependent on aesthetics or function it’s essentially the same issue.
If you’re forever chasing aesthetics you may find yourself developing an unhealthy relationship with food and your body.
If you’re fully focused on function how do you fit into the fitness space when injury strikes, you have a bad session in the gym, or you have a disability?
So instead keep your focus on the healthiest version of YOU! This allows you to progress and regress. It gives you room for adapting and evolving throughout your life. The healthiest version of you at 20 may look very different to the healthiest version of you at 60, but you’ll make peace with it. Because now you no longer measure your worth in how you look OR how you function. You know you have value NO MATTER WHAT.
I would love you prioritise your health and fitness by focusing on how your body functions.
But
I want you to know you still have value, you are still worthy as a human being ❤️
