In your quest to become the healthiest version of yourself, it may be a good idea to break up with your smartphone. Here’s why.
A study at the Mental Health Research and Treatment Center at Ruhr-Universität Bochum showed that using your phone less (or not at all) improved several measures of well-being. The trial gathered 619 people and divided them into three groups. 200 people had to live without their smartphone for one week. 226 used the device one hour less per day. And the remaining 193 used their smartphone as normal. Findings revealed that those who used their devices less or went completely without it had exercised more, experienced fewer feelings of anxiety and depression, and even smoked less cigarettes.
Dr. Julia Brailovskaia, the psychologist heading the research team, noted that completely giving up your phone isn’t necessary. But while an optimal usage time couldn’t be calculated at the time, simply reducing the time spent on your smartphone could positively impact your lifestyle choices and overall health.
