This Saturday, @AcademyMuseum LA will host an Evening with Sacheen Littlefeather (Apache/Yaqui). In 1973, Sacheen Littlefeather became the first Indigenous woman to stand onstage at the Academy Awards ceremony on behalf of Marlon Brando. She gave a passionate and moving speech rejecting the treatment of Native American people in the entertainment industry. She brought attention to the 1973 Wounded Knee protest in South Dakota. This historic television moment is significantly highlighted in the museum’s Academy Awards History gallery. As a result, Sacheen was personally harassed, attacked, and discriminated against for the last fifty years. “It takes a lot of courage to speak up against a whole audience that is against you and your culture. Sacheen delivered this speech with so much grace and honor 💛” - @Ajoobaasani (Artist of Slide 1) Saturday’s event is a much overdue special celebration Native American contributions to the industry and a long-awaited apology from the Academy to Sacheen Littefeather. The event is sold out but will be livestreamed on @AcademyMuseum YouTube channel beginning at 5pm PST (link in bio) #SacheenLittlefeather #Yaqui #Yoeme #Apache #NativeFilm #NativeAmerican #AcademyMuseum #ChangeTheStory #ChangeTheFuture #RepresentationMatters #NativeStorytelling #NativePride
