In "Counternarratives," #AlexandraBell reworks New York Times articles with redactions of original text, revised headlines, swapped images and margins replete with red Sharpie annotations—revealing the implicit biases that control how narratives involving communities of color are depicted.⁣ ⁣ The series demonstrates the extent to which white-centered, sympathetic news coverage remains pervasive within even liberal news organizations. By arguing back and calling out these inequities, Bell invites us to think critically about how historical and contemporary media shape our view on race and politics.⁣ ⁣ Bell's work makes up one of three contemporary moments featured in our presentation of "Life Magazine and the Power of Photography," which highlight living artists' critical reflections on photojournalism and the politics of images.
